The Science of Reconditioning Marine Turbochargers

At Welcome Marine, we understand that the turbocharger is the lung of your main engine. A failure here doesn't just mean power loss; it means off-hire time, missed charters, and potential damage to the combustion chamber. That is why we treat every used turbocharger not as "scrap," but as a precision instrument requiring restoration to OEM tolerances.

Our sourcing strategy is unique. We do not buy from third-party aggregators. We board vessels at the Alang breaking yard before beaching to inspect the turbocharger in operation. We check the logbooks for running hours, surge history, and maintenance intervals. Only units with a clean history are selected for our workshop.

Our 6-Step Restoration Process

  • 1. Chemical Stripping & Cleaning: All components are dismantled and soaked in industrial chemical baths to remove carbon deposits, sludge, and oil residues without damaging the base metal.
  • 2. NDT Inspection: Gas inlet and outlet casings undergo Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UTM) to ensure no erosion has compromised structural integrity. Turbine blades are checked with Dye Penetrant for micro-cracks.
  • 3. Rotor Balancing: This is the most critical step. We use a Schenck dynamic balancing machine to balance the rotor assembly to ISO 1940-1 G2.5 standards. This ensures vibration-free operation at speeds exceeding 15,000 RPM.
  • 4. Bearing & Seal Replacement: Regardless of condition, all bearings and oil seals are replaced with brand new OEM-specification parts. We never reuse consumables.
  • 5. Hydrostatic Testing: Water-cooled casings are pressure tested at 1.5x operating pressure to guarantee no leaks.
  • 6. Preservation & Crating: Finished units are coated with anti-corrosive VCI film, wrapped, and secured in ISPM-15 compliant wooden crates for global export.

Dynamic Balancing

We don't just clean them. Every rotor assembly is balanced on our Schenck machine to ensure zero vibration at 15,000+ RPM.

Ultrasonic Thickness

Gas inlet and outlet casings are tested for wall thickness to ensure they meet Class requirements for pressure safety.

Retrofit Ready

We supply complete units with matching specifications (VTR 0/1/4 series) ready to bolt on to your main engine.
