Preventing Crankcase Explosions

Oil Mist Detectors (OMD) are the first line of defense against catastrophic crankcase explosions. By detecting the opacity of oil mist generated by overheating bearings or piston rings, these systems trigger alarms or shutdowns before the mist reaches explosive concentrations.

At Welcome Marine, we understand that a faulty OMD is a major safety non-compliance issue. We stock complete reconditioned systems, replacement detector heads, and control units for the most common marine OMD models.

Our Testing Process

  • 1. Optics Cleaning: The most common cause of failure is dirty optics. We ultrasonically clean all lenses and mirrors to ensure accurate light transmission.
  • 2. Electronic Verification: Control boards are tested for signal processing accuracy. We verify that the alarm logic triggers at the correct opacity thresholds.
  • 3. Fan & Airflow Check: For systems like Graviner Mk6, the extraction fan is critical. We test motor current and airflow rates.
  • 4. Sensitivity Calibration: Using standard calibration filters, we verify the detector's sensitivity to ensure it meets class requirements.

"Don't sail with a bypassed OMD. We can ship a replacement detector head to your next port of call."

Graviner Mk5 / Mk6 / Mk7

The most widely used systems. We stock detector heads, control units, and junction boxes for all Mark series.

Visatron VN115 / VN116 / VN215

Schaller Automation systems. We have complete units and spare measuring heads available for immediate dispatch.

Daihatsu MD-SX

Specific to Daihatsu engines. We stock the sensor units and main controller boards.

OMD FAQs

Technical support for your safety systems.

While daily checks are recommended, a full functional test with smoke or test filters should be carried out monthly or as per the manufacturer's maintenance schedule.
Yes, we often have the calibration/test filter kits available for Graviner Mk6 and Mk7 systems.
False alarms are often caused by dirty lenses, condensation in the sampling pipes, or a failing suction fan. We recommend cleaning the optics first. If the issue persists, the detector head may need replacement.
