Critical Starting Air Solutions

The main air compressor is critical for vessel maneuverability. A failure in the starting air system can leave a vessel dead in the water. At Welcome Marine, we specialize in reconditioning multi-stage high-pressure compressors (up to 30-40 Bar) used for main engine starting.

We stock popular models like the Tanabe H-Series (H-63, H-64, H-273) and Sperre HL-Series. Our workshop is equipped to handle the complete refurbishment of these reciprocating machines, ensuring they can build pressure quickly and hold it without leaking.

Our 5-Step Reconditioning Process

  • 1. Block & Cylinder Inspection: The compressor block is checked for cracks. Cylinders are measured for ovality and honed to remove glazing, ensuring proper ring seating.
  • 2. Valve Refurbishment: Suction and discharge valves are the most common failure points. We disassemble, clean, and lap the valve plates. Springs are replaced with new ones.
  • 3. Piston & Ring Replacement: Pistons are cleaned and inspected. Piston rings are almost always replaced with new OEM-spec rings to ensure compression efficiency.
  • 4. Cooler Cleaning: Intercoolers and aftercoolers are chemically cleaned to remove scale and carbon buildup, ensuring efficient heat transfer and preventing overheating.
  • 5. Final Pressure Test: The assembled unit is run on our test bed. We verify the time taken to fill a standard air receiver from 0 to 30 Bar to ensure it meets factory specs.

Yes. We have a large stock of new and reconditioned valve assemblies. We can also supply overhaul kits containing gaskets, O-rings, and valve springs for major Tanabe and Sperre models.
Yes. All intercoolers and aftercoolers are hydro-tested to 1.5x their working pressure to ensure there are no tube leaks. We also clean them chemically to ensure maximum heat transfer efficiency.
Yes. If you only need the bare compressor block to replace a seized unit, we can uncouple it from the motor and skid to save on shipping weight and volume.
